Came across this news article while reading CIJ's Media & Black Metal in Malaysia blog. I've excerpted it here, but omitted certain self-promotional paragraphs. (Emphasis & translation to English by myAsylum.)

BALING 27 Jan. - Ahli kumpulan Black Metal, bekas banduan dan kumpulan remaja yang menggelarkan diri mereka kumpulan Jangan Ikut Tuhan (JIT) dipelawa menyertai Putera UMNO.

Wow... on the surfcae, I had thought that what Putera UMNO is doing, at best, was in bad taste (the outreach is okay - but it's the underlying motive that bothers me). But now, having read through the article and translating it, I'm starting to have apprehensive thoughts.

First of all: have the authorities begun incarcerating those suspected of being "members" of this widespread threatening movement called 'Black Metal'?

Second: Is this a Freudian slip by Azeez to imply that once the standardized national Shariah Crimes legislation is enforced this year (links here and here), we can expect incarcerations en masse?

Third, and most important: Is this a hint of an impending blanket crackdown on the arts, freedom of expression, and independent music, particularly where Malays/Muslims are concerned?

The Chinese New Year, just a few hours old, suddenly doesn't look too good anymore...
